Council approves 2023 Special Events calendar

Coronado Concert 2022

In October the City Council approved Coronado’s 2023 calendar of Special Events. Special events are those held in City parks or in public rights of way and that require some level of City support, such as public safety.

The City reviews and approves special event permits annually for the upcoming calendar year. For 2023, the Council approved 14 major special events, 12 moderate events, two minor events, and seven special event requests to waive the prohibition on serving alcohol.

The City Council directed staff to work further with Coronado Fourth of July to determine the feasibility of holding the first Coronado Freedom Fest fundraising event on Orange Avenue in February. Council also advised Coronado Fourth of July to consult with the surrounding businesses. The event would potentially close the 100 and 200 blocks of Orange Avenue from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Feb. 18, 2023, and would include a street fair with  a large cornhole tournament, among other events, to raise funds for the Fourth of July festivities. If it is determined that the event cannot be held on Orange Avenue, the Council pre-approved the alternative location of Spreckels Park.

We look forward to working with all of our community partners on this coming year’s slate of special events.
